This field trip will investigate the two most internationally significant transport systems in Brisbane. The Brisbane Metro is a novel electric trackless-tram-like system that is helping solve capacity problems on the South East Busway. It uses lighter, bi-articulated, battery-electric vehicles that use 'opportunity charging' to power up their batteries at the end of the route. It offers many of the benefits of light rail, at greatly reduced cost. The Brisbane CityCat water transit system operates high-speed passenger ferries along the Brisbane River. The system has evolved from 6 vessels in the early 2000s to over 20 today, with ferry stops made resilient to deal with the city's occasional flooding. Experts will provide information on the planning of the busway network, the Brisbane Metro project, and the CityCat ferry system.
