Field Trip 1: Transport Innovation in Cities: the Brisbane Metro and CityCat passenger ferry systems

This field trip will investigate the two most internationally significant transport systems in Brisbane. The Brisbane Metro is a novel electric trackless-tram-like system that is helping solve capacity problems on the South East Busway. It uses lighter, bi-articulated, battery-electric vehicles that use 'opportunity charging' to power up their batteries at the end of the route. It offers many of the benefits of light rail, at greatly reduced cost. The Brisbane CityCat water transit system operates high-speed passenger ferries along the Brisbane River. The system has evolved from 6 vessels in the early 2000s to over 20 today, with ferry stops made resilient to deal with the city's occasional flooding. Experts will provide information on the planning of the busway network, the Brisbane Metro project, and the CityCat ferry system.

Field Trip 2: Discovering Brisbane’s music scene: A tour of Fortitude Valley music precinct

Discover Brisbane’s music precinct through a tour guided by Brisbane’s musician and music historian Dr John Willsteed. John Willsteed was a musician in the Go-Betweens and still playing with alternative country band Halfway. He will share his memories of FV, share thoughts about the evolution of this iconic neighbourhood in Brisbane and share his knowledge about the history of music venues and the most recent events supported by the government such as Fortitude Valley's huge annual music event: Big Sound Festival. A blend of history, music and urban planning.
