The 2022 Dorothy Hill Women in Earth and Environmental Sciences Symposium invited organisations to become involved with a progressive Symposium – one that promotes inclusion, diversity and excellence in science with a particular focus on supporting the careers of women in earth and environmental sciences.
Traditionally , the Symposium has been held in-person with eminent speakers travelling from all over the world to be in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. With the current restrictions placed upon us all due to COVID-19, we planned the Symposium to include a mix of in-person, virtual and pre-recorded presentations. If the resumption of travel within Australia continues and is supported by rollout of the COVID-19 vaccines, then our preference is to have as much of the Symposium as possible in person.
BACKGROUND
The inaugural event was held in 2017 and was created to celebrate the achievements of notable women and men in the Earth and Environmental Sciences, and to provide a platform for career development of the geoscience community.
The University of Queensland was delighted to name the Symposium after Professor Dorothy Hill who was the first female Professor in Australia, the first woman to become a member of the Australian Academy of Sciences and its first female President. She is someone who remains an integral part of The University of Queensland’s history of diversity and Earth and Environmental Sciences.
Hosted by The School of Earth and Environmental Sciences at The University of Queensland, the previous Dorothy Hill Symposiums (held in 2017 & 2019) were very successful. They created a legacy of ongoing positive networks within the Earth and Environmental Sciences sector, bringing together and celebrating women in Earth and Environmental Sciences. The strong networks continue today.
This Symposium is not a “normal” conference. It is a mix of showcasing female and male leaders in our science, as well as the speakers providing support and mentorship to others by sharing their experiences – both professional and personal.
The Symposium includes two days of interesting presentations, interactive panel discussions and abundant networking opportunities.
Our Organising Committee combines a wonderful mix of Industry, Government, and Academics – all of whom are focussed on promoting excellence for women in Earth and Environmental Sciences.
I do hope your organisation will join in supporting and celebrating the achievements within Earth and Environmental Science, as well as the legacy of Professor Dorothy Hill and all she contributed to our science.
Kind regards
Professor Patrick Moss
