TAFE Directors Australia (TDA), on behalf of TAFEs across Australia, welcome the opportunity to invite you to participate in the TDA Convention 2019. This year’s convention follows on from the successful joint TDA / World Federation of Colleges and Polytechnics (WFCP) Congress in Melbourne, that many of you attended in October last year as sponsors, exhibitors or participants.

This year the TDA Convention builds on the experiences and networks of the World Congress, and we very much look forward to your involvement again this year. The Congress examined global trends for skills arising from technological transformation which ultimately impact in local economies and through social change. In such an uncertain time, one outcome that is clear is the demand for vocational and technical skills acquired through applied learning, as well as intrapreneurship needed within firms, and entrepreneurship needed for industries and national economies as they seek comparative advantages. At the same time, training opportunities must be accessible to individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds to ensure they are not left behind.

In this year’s convention we will look at the unique position that TAFEs play in responding to these challenges. This is your opportunity, as a partner or supporter of TAFE, to be part of the many solutions that will contribute to this exciting future; one that will almost certainly have at its centre, TAFEs.

About the TDA Convention 2019

The TDA Convention 2019 will be held in Brisbane at the Hilton Brisbane with support from TAFE Queensland from Tuesday 3 to Thursday 5 September 2019.

The 2019 convention will be more in-TAFE focused with an emphasis on building strong consensus regarding the unique place of TAFEs in Australia’s education system.

The convention programme will articulate the unique role TAFEs play in vocational education, and across schooling and higher education, to deliver for citizens and support economic growth, technology transfer and community development.

New Approach, TAFE Convention 2019

The convention for 2019 is designed for the sharing of stories of success and discussing issues and challenges with peers so participants can take new ideas back to work. Sharing of best practice helps every TAFE advance. The desire is for attendees to come away inspired to succeed in the place they have in TAFE or the way in which they work with TAFEs.

The time for harnessing the power of TAFE is 2019

The approach to tertiary education in Australia will be debated in 2019 and beyond. The Government has outstanding reviews to consider such as the Review of the Australian Qualifications Framework and Strengthening Skills, the review of vocational education and training by the Hon Steven Joyce released in April this year. While the Government has responded with some measures in the 2019 Budget other recommendations still need to be debated. The approach to National Skills Commission and pilot Skills Organisations in priority industries of human services and of digital technologies announced in the budget will set important trends for the sector

The convention provides the opportunity to state the purpose of TAFE, especially in the context of these reviews and the overall tertiary education landscape. The convention is the time to celebrate the distinct role TAFEs play in the Australian community, and in helping other countries.
