The School of Earth and Environmental Sciences at The University of Queensland hosted the inaugural Dorothy Hill Women in Earth Science Symposium, which was held in November 2017.
The intent of the Symposium was to celebrate the achievements of notable women in the Earth and Environmental Sciences and we chose to name the Symposium after the late Dorothy Hill who was the first female Professor in Australia, the first woman to become a member of the Australian Academy of Sciences and its first female President. Her achievements are intertwined with the legacy and history of the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences (SEES) at The University of Queensland.
Some of the world’s most eminent female earth scientists from both Australia and overseas travelled to Brisbane in order to present at the Symposium. They were very generous with their time, support and involvement - this provided wonderful opportunities for networking and celebrated the amazing achievements of past and current female pioneers in Earth Sciences.
With a program full of interesting presentations, interactive panel discussions and abundant networking opportunities, the Symposium was a powerful two days for attendees to gain inspiration, education and new network opportunities within our community.
This initiative was an important contribution towards addressing gender equality in STEMM in higher education, research institutions and industry, and we hope it will inform the wider community of the contribution of women providing excellence in their chosen discipline.
We are confident of strong support for the 2019 Symposium with increased attendance. We invite your organisation to partner with the School and the University and showcase its role in supporting women in earth and environmental sciences.
