2017 Symposium

The University of Queensland’s School of Earth and Environmental Sciences proudly hosted the inaugural Dorothy Hill Women in Earth Sciences Symposium in November 2017. The Symposium joined together leading women in the Earth Sciences in both academia and industry with early career researchers and students looking to study Earth Sciences.

It was a powerful two days of learning, networking, and absorbing lessons from some of the top women in Earth Sciences, including those from key fields such as:

  • Atmosphere and Oceans
  • Climates of the Past
  • Geochemistry
  • Geomicrobiology
  • Geophysics
  • Mineral Resources and Energy
  • Petrology
  • Seismology
  • Tectonics
  • Volcanology

I was inspired by the honesty of panel discussions and quality of research

A refreshing and thought provoking symposium

Every topic discussed during the symposium was absolutely amazing. I loved to see how the speakers were strong enough to share their own life experiences and challenges during the development of their careers. Also, it was very interesting to see the statistics regarding the presence of men and women in sciences and the different challenges in career related to gender

I enjoyed the diversity of talks and that all speakers gave excellent context for their work and explained most things for a broad audience. There was also a good mix of speakers from different career stages. The panel discussions were also excellent and one of the first times I've seen and heard women discuss their careers, leadership and challenges in a full and frank way, probably as a direct consequence of the supportiveness of all attendees and the general non-competitive atmosphere of the meeting
